Stage-by-stage term map & worked Elena Rivera traceStages 01–10 · clinical vs. OvaFlow safeguards
Worked trace (Elena Rivera, fictional patient): On Oct 30 at 5:10 PM PDT (17:10 PDT), Dr. Mira Lee reviews morning estradiol and follicle measurements and signs an updated trigger shot order (version 3, 8:00 PM PDT / 20:00 PDT) for a Nov 1, 2026 retrieval at 7:00 AM PST (07:00 PST). OvaFlow marks the earlier 8:30 PM PDT (20:30 PDT, version 2) instruction as a superseded instruction, calculates the 36.0-hour retrieval interval across the daylight-saving change, and keeps the update in Review in the EMR until nurse Nora Ruiz, RN verifies and sends it.
Decoding common chart shorthand & lab notes5 worked translations · clinical vs. plain language
What you see on the portal or sheetClinical / laboratory meaningIn plain language
Serum estradiol, progesterone and luteinizing hormone lab panel

Cumulus-oocyte complexes retrieved, mature metaphase II eggs, fertilized zygotes
14 eggs collected at retrieval, 11 mature enough to fertilize, and 9 fertilized normally the next morning.
Blastocyst stage reached on Day 5 or 6 with trophectoderm biopsy
Embryos that reached the five-to-seven-day blastocyst stage and had a few outer cells gently sampled for genetic testing.
Elective single embryo transfer in a modified-natural frozen cycle

Prototype walkthroughOvaFlow term

WorkupIVF term

The tests and assessments done before treatment begins. When two people are involved, each has their own.

Wrong-chart stopOvaFlow term

If the open chart isn't the patient the work belongs to, placement stops and the draft is kept.

Questions about these terms

How to use this glossary safely.

Why does OvaFlow include both medical IVF terms and software workflow terms in one glossary?

In daily fertility care, clinical milestones (such as a trigger shot, a 2PN fertilization check or a beta-hCG blood draw) and operational states (such as a signed source, a superseded instruction or an accepted handoff) happen in the same conversation. Putting both vocabularies in one plain-language reference lets patients, nurses, coordinators and clinicians verify exactly what a chart label or status badge means.

Do these definitions replace my clinic's medication sheets or consent forms?

No. Every definition on this page is general and educational. Clinics use different stimulation protocols, laboratory grading scales, luteal support schedules and call-in rules. Always follow your own care team's signed instructions, and contact your clinic directly (or 911 in an emergency) for symptoms or dosing questions.

Why does the number of eggs retrieved differ from the number of follicles on ultrasound or the number of blastocysts?

Each step of an IVF cycle is a biological filter. Ultrasound measures fluid-filled ovarian follicles in millimeters, not every follicle contains a retrievable egg, not every retrieved egg is mature (Metaphase II), not every mature egg fertilizes into a 2PN zygote, and only a subset of fertilized eggs continue dividing to the five-to-seven-day blastocyst stage.

What is the difference between a 'Prepared' update and a 'Verified' update in OvaFlow?

A 'Prepared' update is a draft assembled from a clinician-signed source that is waiting for a staff member to review and send inside the clinic's own EMR or portal. A 'Verified' update means OvaFlow has completed a readback check confirming the clinic's own system actually saved or published the record.

How are definitions sourced and kept free of outcome claims?

Clinical and laboratory definitions are adapted into plain language from the International Glossary on Infertility and Fertility Care (ASRM/ESHRE/ICMArt), NICE Guideline NG257, ESHRE ovarian stimulation guidance and CDC ART surveillance definitions. OvaFlow terms describe product design intent without claiming live EMR integration or clinical outcomes.
